It was bad enough for first-year general manager Rick Hahn when he lost Gavin Floyd for the season with Tommy John surgery last month. Floyd was coming off the books after the season and could have been a card played once the trade deadline grew closer.

It hasn't gone well at all, evident with the latest stumble -- a 4-3 loss to the A's Friday night -- and with Floyd, and now possibly Peavy, out of the trade picture, that leaves relievers Jesse Crain and Matt Thornton.

The gruesome line drive off the head of Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ last week was an unneeded reminder of the scary vulnerability of a pitcher on a baseball diamond. While hitters are well protected by a batting helmet and a wide assortment of pads, the pitcher has no such armor, even though a batted ball has almost twice as much force about 5,000-plus pounds worth, according to one study and far greater velocity than a pitchers hardest throw. As he is lurching forward off the mound, a pitcher has only milliseconds to react and try to avoid being struck. 

Happ could not react in time. He was incredibly lucky, however, in that his injuries amounted to a few stitches by his right ear, a skull fracture that will heal without surgery and a twisted knee sustained in his fall. 

Thirteen years ago, on Sept. 8, Red Sox pitcher Bryce Florie was struck in the right eye by a ball off the bat of Yankees hitter Ryan Thompson. The sound of the impact haunts anyone who was there that day, including Florie. It would boil down to having an extra umpire on duty at each game to be available to review boundary calls such as what is and is not a home run. That means hiring 15 new umpires one per each stadium in use each day or night at a cost of approximately $60,000 a year per team (based on 30 teams splitting the umpires annual average salary of $120,000). Most teams make that much money on two, maybe three, kegs of beer each night, so the cost does not seem exorbitant. Cleveland manager Terry Francona advocated the plan of an extra set of umpiring eyes at each stadium when he was with the Red Sox. It’s shaping up to be a real Maine winter this year and few people are happier than the organizer’s of the state’s three distance sled dog racing events.

Volunteer committees behind the Irving Woodlands-Mad Bomber Eagle Lake 100-mile race, set for Jan. 19; the Plum Creek Wilderness 100-mile race in Greenville on Feb. 2; and the Can Am Crown 250-mile race in Fort Kent on March 2; are all reporting excellent trails and conditions for dogs, mushers and spectators.

“The race is looking awesome,” Amy Dugan, one of the organizers behind the Greenville race, said last week. “The conditions are just fantastic right now [and] we must have a good 3 feet of snow on the trails.”

Cold temperatures in late November followed by a slight warm up, then a solid freeze has created a near-perfect base for running dogs.

And over the past several weeks Mother Nature has done her part in covering that base with fresh snow from Portland to Fort Kent.

“That early snowfall and cold temperatures have created excellent trail conditions for this year’s race,” Tenley Bennett, co-organizer of the Eagle Lake race said. “Most of the snow we’ve received this season has been quite dry [and] combine that, when packed, with cold temperatures and it sets up for a hard and fast trail.”

That’s good news for races like the ones in Eagle Lake and Greenville which have been forced to cancel or drastically re-route trails in recent years due to lack of snow.

In Greenville, crews are busily grooming trails and preparing the race’s new start location near the Trailside Restaurant, meaning mushers no longer face up to five miles on the fickle ice conditions of Moosehead Lake.

“We are thrilled not to be worrying about the lake this year,” Dugan said.

The three races routinely draw scores of mushers with their teams from across the country and Canada and hundreds of spectators to their respective regions.

“The Wilderness Race offers a lot of places for spectators to see the teams traveling,” Dugan said. “This is somewhat unique in sled dog racing.”

Mushers run their teams along trails managed by the Appalachian Mountain Club and lodges at Little Lyford and Gorman Chairback in addition to the West Branch Pond Camps offer warm places for fans to cheer on the drivers and dogs, Dugan said.

“Things really are looking just great,” Beurmond Banville, president of the Can Am Crown Board of Directors up in Fort Kent, said. “We’ve had some guys out on the trails doing preliminary work as far back as a month ago.”

Great conditions also help get the mushers pumped up and ready, Banville added.

“This really gets the mushers going,” he said. “A good bunch of snow means they can get out and train the teams and start thinking about racing.”

“I am planning on doing all three of these races this year,” Foucher said. “It’s been a Godsend that we have had two big snowfalls where I live already. Without that snow, I’m not sure my team would have been ready for the first race in Eagle Lake.”

Every few months, it seems, our nation is confronted by a mass killing in which a disturbed and disillusioned gunman with visions of notoriety opens fire with intent to kill, maim and shock us to our core. And like a ritual, we go through a circular process of disbelief, grief, outrage, and ultimately, acceptance. Whether it’s on a college campus, in a crowded theater or at a suburban mall, the location and body count changes, but we do not.

That’s because we are a gun culture and we’ve been led to believe that any legislative action that limits perceived Second Amendment rights somehow makes us less safe, less free, less American.

If you’re a parent, ask yourself, do you feel safer today? Do you feel more free? Or are you terrified that someday the location that will pop up on news sites across the world will be your hometown?

There are no easy solutions to the undoubted mental illness and instability that leads to mass killings, such as what we saw on Friday when a gunman killed 20 young children and six staff members at an elementary school in Connecticut. No measure of gun control, no amount of counseling and no system of protection will ever eliminate acts by those looking for carnage.

But there are solutions that will limit the effectiveness for those who have a singular motive to take as many lives as they can in as short a period as possible.

We can start by extending the ban on semi-automatic firearms, which are the go-to weapons in many of these types of terrorist attacks. We can also dramatically increase the waiting period needed to obtain a firearm while broadening the background checks that are currently required. We can blame the National Rifle Associate, which is strident in its belief and unapologetic even amid the worst of the atrocities. But they’re a business looking to protect what’s theirs. Our elected leaders, however, have been mostly silent when it’s mattered most. They say all the right things about “unspeakable tragedies” and “hugging your children tighter” and that “it’s time to start the conversation.” But the conversation started in earnest in 1999 in Columbine, Colo. We’ve been wasting time and watching gun deaths mount since then. If this isn’t the time to finally take real action, then how many more senseless killings will it take?

She scarcely noticed the crowd of village officials forming at the opposite side of the 5,200-square-foot building for a dedication ceremony.

Metra provided the village with $4.8 million to fund construction of a "basic" station that would handle the 2,500 daily commuters at the station. The village received $1.2 million in federal grants and chipped in nearly $7 million in village funds to upgrade construction.

Minneapolis is consistently ranked in the top three for bike-friendly cities nationwide, but students and faculty at the University of Minnesota say there’s work to be done in the area.

Alleviating the number of high-incident areas on campus, changing routes and improving the role of bikers around the University area are all issues bike activists cite as a problems.

Reducing the number of bicycle incidents in front of the Science Teaching and Student Services building near the Washington Avenue Bridge is the University’s Parking and Transportation department’s top priority for improving the bike system on campus.

The department hired a consultant at the beginning of the fall semester to improve the area. The consultant’s recommendations will be presented to the department’s staff within the next few weeks.

Steve Sanders, head of the University’s bike program, said 6,500 bikes cross the Washington Avenue Bridge each day, which intersects with

“It’s a good idea, but it’s really tucked out of the way in this parking lot that nobody is going to go to or know about,” Lindeke said. “I wish it was more centrally located.”

Kranz said he’s never used the bike center, which is in the first floor of the Oak Street Parking Ramp.

Sanders said that was the best location that was available with access to the street. He said when the University’s campus expands in that direction “it’s going to be less of an issue.”

In terms of bike planning in general, Lindeke said the University of California and the University of Wisconsin-Madison “do a better job than we do.”

But Matson said he lived in Portland and Washington “that are supposedly bike cities,” and he thinks the University of Minnesota is definitely a leader for bicyclists.

Matson said he hosted a discussion a week ago at a Cycling Team practice on ways to improve the bike system.

“The general consensus was that cycling infrastructure here at the U is flawed at best and downright dangerous at worst,” Matson said.

He said the best way to improve the bike system “without spending too many resources” is increasing separation between bikers and pedestrians — a strategy most prevalent on the West Bank.

The cyclists agreed connectivity is a major concern for getting navigating through campus.

Lindeke said that improvements could be made if the school had an “organized voice” for people riding bikes “to make sure the University’s administration pays attention to them when they are making decisions about how to design streets.”

Kranz said the easiest way to avoid accidents is simply having “bikers bike a little slower and people just following the rules.”
