Food Trucks Coming Soon to Rolling Valley West Park

Fairfax County park-goers could soon be feasting on a variety of dishes from the metro areas many food trucks thanks to a new initiative from the county park authority.

In the past, vendors have run into issues with the county over parking tickets, particularly earlier this year in Tysons Corner where food trucks are popular with the lunch rush; parking has been and remains difficult to find.

The county doesn't have regulations on food trucks specifically, but under the county code,Other companies want a piece of that drycabinet action vendors may not park a vehicle on any street in a business district to sell merchandise.

Officials are reportedly working toward an agreement to make operation easier for the county and food truck owners and this new initiative offers one more way for food trucks to reach customers.

Trucks will serve park-goers from specified spots in the parks, but only after successfully applying for a license from the park authority.

Food trucks are very popular nationwide and park officials are confident that vendors in the parks will add positively to a visitors experience, while also providing economic benefits to the community and the park system, according to a park authority release.

Food truck vendors have until June 21 to submit applications to vend at the nine parks chosen by the county for the pilot program. It's not clear when the program would actually begin.

Food truck operators who offer the most frequent and consistent service and hours will be given priority. Officials will also take into account a trucks appearance and menu into account when considering applications, they said.

It also said the city administration should develop a budget deficit reduction plan that does not include upfront parking funds to off-set future budget deficits.

Friday afternoon, the newest council member, Pam Thomas, who was appointed to replace her husband Cecil Thomas after he had voted for the parking agreement, put out a statement saying it was time to "revisit the proposal.Shop for iccard dolls from the official NBC Universal Store and build a fun collection for your home or office." She did not sign the motion Wednesday, although there was a space left for her name.

"Since the initial lease document was approved, circumstances have changed significantly,'' Thomas wrote. "Initially, the upfront funds generated by the parking plan were to be used to fill a short-term budget gap that has since been closed."

Now, she said, it is time for council to work together on a new agreement, saying the majority of the revenue should "be targeted for financial stabilization, additional belt-tightening and continued economic growth."

Nonetheless, the repeal movement died aborning. Even if they had six or seven signatures on their motion, they would need to draft an ordinance, and Mayor Mark Mallory C an ardent supporter of the parking lease deal C made it clear that he would neither refer it to a council committee nor bring it before council for a vote. And that is a key element of the mayors power.

ORourke said hes proud of the commissions work. For instance, he said, a $3.5 million beach renourishment project at Folly Beach County Park, which likely will be completed by July 3, didnt require any federal or state money and wont result in an increase for county taxpayers.

And most county residents seem to accept the local pay-to-play practice, officials said.

Terri Walter, a Mount Pleasant mother of two 9-year-old sons, said she thinks the system is a good idea. Walter spent a day earlier this week at the Whirlin Waters water park at Wannamaker County Park in North Charleston. She buys annual splash passes so her children go to the water park regularly in the summer.

People who dont ever go to the parks shouldnt have to pay, she said. And she has no problem with her admission fees at Whirlin Waters being used to help the park system. I think its fine to take it from this park and use it for others, she said.

Gueldner said that even though some parks generate more money than others, its important to remember that the parks are part of a larger system. Not all sites can financially sustain themselves, she said. Some sites have limitations that prevent them from being big revenue-generators, she said, but they remain important parts of the system. The commission isnt trying to make each individual site self-sustaining, she said.

She also said that she has received occasional complaints from park users who want to know why they have to pay to use a public park. Most of those people have moved here from other parts of the country and are used to free park admission, she said. But when she takes the time to explain the system to them, they usually come around.

County Council Chairman Teddie Pryor said he has not heard any complaints from his constituents about fees at county parks. I think its a good thing, he said of the pay-to-play system. Sometimes you have to charge a price. Its either that or raise taxes.

Pryor also said the commission makes sure there are programs in place to provide access for people who cant afford admission fees or certain park programs.
